An off-duty San Antonio police officer was arrested early Friday morning on drunken driving charges after he allegedly crashed into the back of a Kirby police officer’s squad car.

Kirby police said the crash occurred around 3:30 a.m. in the 5500 block of Farm-to-Market Road 78.

The Kirby officer had pulled someone over for a minor traffic violation and was sitting in his car on the side of the road when Armando Alvarado Jr., an officer with the San Antonio Police Department, allegedly struck the back of his squad car.

There were no skid marks at the scene, Kirby police said, indicating Alvarado Jr. did not brake before the crash.

The Kirby officer was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Alvarado Jr. was later determined to be intoxicated by authorities and was arrested on a charge of drunken driving.

Bexar County deputies and SAPD responded to the scene to assist Kirby police.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus is aware of the incident, and Alvarado Jr. will be placed on administrative leave pending investigation, according to Romana Lopez, a spokeswoman for the San Antonio Police Department.

A mugshot for Alvarado Jr. has not yet been released.
