Pharr TX – In an appalling example of police state hypocrisy. A Hidalgo County Sheriff’s deputy is facing felony DWI charges after being stopped on Cage Boulevard at 10:46 pm on Sunday August 23rd.
Deputy Mariana Yvonne Navarette was stopped by police after they witnessed her silver 2012 Nissan Sentra run a red light at the intersection with Sam Houston Avenue.
Police stated that during their investigation she exhibited signs of intoxication.
According to a press release by the Pharr police department:
“The driver was given the opportunity to perform field sobriety tests, which she refused to perform.”
Authorities also confirmed on Monday that Deputy Navarette had a child passenger in her vehicle at the time of her arrest.
“We take these kinds of matters very seriously,” sheriff’s spokesperson Cmdr. Joel Rivera said
“We are adhering to employment law and making sure the employee’s rights are not violated.”
In a demonstration of how seriously the department truly takes these charges, Deputy Navarette has been placed on paid vacation, at the expense of taxpayers, while the police investigate themselves.
If convicted Deputy Navarette faces up to two years in prison and a two-year license suspension.
The Hidalgo county sheriff’s department is no stranger to cops breaking the law.
On March 28th 2014, after nine years as the county’s top law enforcement officer. Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering.
The charge stemmed from a campaign contribution from suspected drug trafficker Tomas “El Gallo” Gonzalez.
‘Officers of the law’ are traditionally viewed as individuals who deserve nothing but respect and obedience.
The truth, however, is that they are all human beings and their actions, whether under the shield of ‘law’ or not,
should be questioned equally the same.
