HONOLULU – A former police officer accused of staging a burglary of his own home pleaded guilty Thursday to two counts of insurance fraud.
The fraud happened from October 2017 to March, during which former HPD Officer Travis Copeland sought to file the false claims.
Prosecutors said he staged a burglary of his Pearl City home and reported jewelry, cash, liquor and electronics were missing. His insurance company paid him nearly $4,800 for the claim.
During the same staged burglary, he reported his Mercedes missing. A witness later reported it burning nearby.
Prosecutors said his insurance company would have paid Copeland $13,000 for the car had it been a valid claim.
But the officer later admitted to fraud investigators that he’d staged the burglary and the burning Mercedes to file the false claims.
Sentencing in the case is set for October.
