Highway Cop Involved in Deadly 2016 L.I. Crash Arrested For Pimping His Ride With $9G of NYPD’s Cash

The NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau arrested Officer Edward Rosovich on Wednesday, charging him with official misconduct, grand larceny and other crimes.

An NYPD Highway cop involved in an off-duty crash that killed two people in Long Island two years ago has been arrested for pimping out his car with $9,000 worth of special lights, sirens and gadgets he bought on an NYPD-issued credit card, authorities said Thursday.

The NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau arrested Officer Edward Rosovich on Wednesday, charging him with official misconduct, grand larceny and other crimes.

Rosovich, 35, is facing seven years in jail for allegedly purchasing six Motorola two-way radios, a foam-lined carrying case for the radios, a Rhino hitch-step bar, a $2,688 light and siren package for an automobile, a device that detects listening devices, a satellite phone and several other items for his personal use on different dates in 2016.

He paid for the items with his department-issued “P-Card,” which is similar to a credit card that cops can use to make purchases as long as they have their supervisor’s approval.

When he made the purchases, Rosovich was the Procurement and Budget Director for the NYPD’s Highway Division, cops said. Several of the items were sneaked into legitimate purchases made for the department, officials said.

Investigators determined that Rosovich spent $9,000 on personal items. Some of the items he bought he resold, sources said.

Internal Affairs detectives arrested Rosovich at his Queens home on Wednesday. He was immediately suspended following his arrest, officials said.

When he was questioned, he admitted to buying the satellite phone and said that he had every intention of paying the department back, according to court papers.

“Officer Edward Rosovich is accused of stealing nearly $10,000 from the NYPD in new electronics and other equipment — including lights and sirens — for his personal vehicle,” Police Commissioner James O’Neill said in a statement. “His alleged acts are a violation of his sworn oath and they’re against the law.”

A Queens Criminal Court judge ordered him released without bail during a brief court appearance Wednesday.

On May 23, 2016, Rosovich was involved in a fatal crash on the Long Island Expressway. He was driving his GMC Yukon when he struck a disabled BMW near Old Westbury about 11 p.m.

On May 23, 2016, off-duty Officer Edward Rosovich was involved in a fatal crash on the Long Island Expressway that killed two, officials said.

The force of the impact knocked the luxury car forward into a 20-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman standing outside the stalled vehicle. The couple were launched over a highway divider into the eastbound lane, cops said.

The BMW had hit a guardrail and stalled before Rosovich’s Yukon barreled into it.

The man, who was driving the BMW before it crashed, died at the scene. The woman died at a local hospital.

Rosovich, who remained at the scene, suffered minor injuries. The highway cop wasn’t drunk and was not criminally charged.

At the time, investigators believed poor lighting and the rain-swept roads contributed to the crash.

Filming Cops was started in 2010 as a conglomerative blogging service documenting police abuse. The aim isn’t to demonize the natural concept of security provision as such, but to highlight specific cases of State-monopolized police brutality that are otherwise ignored by traditional media outlets.
