Louisiana Police Chief Wayne Welsh Resigns After Posting Racist Meme on Facebook

Relations between police and the public constantly goes up and down, and now a Louisiana police officer is under fire for posting a racist meme via Facebook. An assistant chief at the Estherwood Police Department named Wayne Welsh posted a meme this past Sunday that showed a woman holding a little girl’s head underwater with the caption: “When your daughter’s first crush is a little negro boy.”

Many people in the Louisiana area were thrown off by Welsh’s post, and social media users took screenshots of the post that soon went viral on many platforms. Because of the backlash, the police chief of Estherwood, Ernest Villejoin, responded to press, saying the “situation has been taken care of.”

Welsh resigned shortly after the backlash from posting the meme. Villejoin went on to tell local news station KADN, “When I found out about it, I couldn’t believe I had to call him. I called him at work and asked him what the hell is going on. He done it. He said it and he realized what he had done after he done it and he deleted it but it was too late.”

Filming Cops was started in 2010 as a conglomerative blogging service documenting police abuse. The aim isn’t to demonize the natural concept of security provision as such, but to highlight specific cases of State-monopolized police brutality that are otherwise ignored by traditional media outlets.
