A trooper with the Virginia State Police has been indicted by a Scott County grand jury on rape and forcible sodomy charges, according to court records obtained by News 5.

Matthew Morgan Phillips, 28, of Bristol, Virginia, is now suspended from duty without pay until legal proceedings against him are completed, according to VSP spokesperson Corrine Geller.

The court report says the rape incident occurred in January, while the other case dates back to September and October of 2014. Prosecutors said that he forced himself on two women.

Geller noted that Phillips had made arrangements with the court to turn himself in on the charges next week. His next court date is scheduled for Aug. 14.

According to VSP information, Phillips’ hometown is Castlewood, Virginia, and he graduated from the State Police Academy in 2012.
